This business with the “LOL”, I think it’s a bit out of control. I feel it’s been highly over used. I understand the concept, but honestly, how often is it when you type LOL, you really did LOL? Were you really sitting there at your computer actually laughing out loud? HA HA HA! To no one in particular? No, I doubt it.
I think we need to revisit this particular abbreviation. Maybe have something else that can be used. Like “CTM” (chuckled to myself)? Or perhaps “SOTI”? (smiling on the inside)? How about “TMMS” (that made me smirk)? Because that’s usually what I do when I read something really funny. I chuckle. I smile. I smirk. But I don’t actually LOL.
I’m not sure exactly who I need to submit a new alternative to in order for it to be considered - Google? Wikipedia? Bill Gates? Don’t know, but I’m willing to get to the bottom of it.
Got any other new abbreviation suggestions for me? And in the meantime, consider it a compliment if I leave “CTM” in the comments of your blog. Because you’ll know that you actually DID make me chuckle to myself.

Demitri Martin suggested “LQTM” (laughing quietly to myself)
Even when there’s people around I don’t laugh out loud. I’m one of those quiet laughers. You know those annoying people? Yeah, I’m one of those.

i personally never use “lol” simply because 1. it’s overused and 2. it kind of irritates me. i sometimes respond: “am i really THAT funny? are you REALLY laughing out loud? or are you just a liar?”
i do say “hahah” often though because it can be used both when you think something is funny or when you’re actually laughing. i usually use it because i’m literally sitting at my computer (alone) laughing. loud.

I use LOL but not like some people. It annoys me. They use it when they have nothing else to say. Especially on Twitter. When I do use it I really am laughing out loud

I usually am one of those crazies that is laughing at my computer screen. What about BATMN? Blowing air through my nose. That’s usually what I do, with an odd little smile.

OK…so I know it’s a little – ok – a lot off color. But my husband and his best friend Joe had this chat…they HATE LOL. Exactly for the reasons why you have issues…so they created TMAH. Tickle my asshole. Leave it up to guys to make that up. Now when they send e-mails to their friends it how they end it. Personally, I also think this was hilarious. I was going to post this very subject on my blog, but you beat me to the punch. LOVE IT!
Please don’t TMAH…it’s really a one way runway !
TMMS,
Cristina

I really like PIMP (peeing in my pants)…I think LOL is way over-rated too, in fact I was actually going to blog about it soon! xoxo

So true…Twitter and Facebook are overrun with LOLs. I never write it unless I actually did…But some people write ‘Going grocery shopping. LOL.’ Really? Come on…they mustn’t know what it means!

So when I say LOL I really did laugh out loud, but it was more of a chuckle. I don’t really say that anymore. I usually just say HA! If something really made me laugh then I say HAHA! If something really made me LMAO then I say Bah hahaha, because that’s what my laugh really does sound like. HA!

I don’t use lol at all, because I think it sounds daft. I am unlikely to say in full to someone “Oh, that was so funny that I laughed out loud.” I mean – a laugh IS out loud, so you don’t have to clarify that. When you laugh under your breath, then it’s more of a chuckle or chortle.
In fact, when I read things on the internets that make me laugh, I generally do make a ha ha noise with my the back of my throat, and so I actually write “ha ha” as part of a reply if that’s the case. Or if I actually laughed loudly, then HA HA! If that makes me a dag, then so be it.
Plus the other point is that some people end every sentence with lol. It gets really dull after a while.

Sometimes I really do laugh out loud. But it’s usually just a really big HA because I’m hiding in the bathroom and don’t want anyone to find me. Not that the music doesn’t give away my whereabouts.
