Last night Willie and I were getting into bed.  I had been wearing little ankle socks to keep my tootsies warm because, somehow, it became Fall yesterday (WTF weather?).  They looked like this:

Willie has some very similar socks.  They look like this:

At which point, we have a conversation that went something like this:

Willie:  Why are you wearing my socks?

Me:  I’m not.

Willie:  Yes you are.

Me:  No, these are mine.

Willie:  No, those are MY socks.

Me:  First of all, I’m a women’s size 7.  You’re a man’s size 11.  I think I would know if the socks I were wearing fit me or not.

Willie:  Those are mine.

Me:  Secondly, mine are very short.  Yours go up on your ankle about an inch or two.  See these ones?  Very short.  Mine.

Willie:  (doing his best to be annoying) Nope, they’re mine.

Me:  (growing more annoyed)  How would you know?!  Did you buy these socks?

Willie:  No.

Me:  No, that’s right!  I bought these socks.  In fact, have you EVER bought yourself socks?  Or underwear for that matter?

Willie:  No.

Me:  Right then.  Trust me when I say these are MY socks.

Then I got to thinking . . . it IS always me who buys the socks and underwear in this house!  And before me, it was his Mom (in fact, it’s often STILL his Mom because he likes a particular kind of underwear that can only be bought in Britain and she travels there once or twice a year and brings some back for him).

Me:  Have you EVER bought yourself socks or underwear?

Willie:  No.

Me:  You’re a grown man.  You’re in your late 30′s.  Don’t you think it’s about time you did???

Willie:  makes a feeble attempt to ignore me . . .

Me:  In fact, I’m going to take the boys shopping this weekend so THEY can buy their own.  Let’s break this cycle early, shall we?

Willie:  They don’t have any money.

Me:  Then I’ll give them some.  Then I’ll take them to the Mall and tell them to use it to buy themselves socks and underwear.  It’ll be for their own good.

Willie:  Ah . . . they’re not going to like that very much.

He’s probably right.

Does your husband/boyfriend buy his own socks & underwear or are we creating a society of Mamma’s Boys???  I’m launching a campaign to stop this madness – who’s in?

–>My husband only wears short black ankle socks so his are easy to distinquish in the wash.

  2. SurferwifeNo Gravatar Says:

my husband is only allowed to wear one particular brand of socks so it makes matching them after laundry easier. If he were to buy his own he would mess my plan up.

So it’s more of a me having a control issues problem.

I just bought new underwear for me and the hubs yesterday! He wasn’t with me this time, but he usually is. Not that he needs to be, I know exactly which socks and underwear are his favorites.

  4. Yankee GirlNo Gravatar Says:

I don’t think my hubs as ever bought his own. Sometimes he is with me and we buy it together, but I don’t think he has ever had a solo adventure in buying socks and underwear. You are right. This must be stopped.

  5. brandyNo Gravatar Says:

chris always gripes about his socks not matching so i told him to throw them all away and start over.

I just signed up for the gravatar thing…thanks for that info! Now I want to see if it works. Yay for underwear!

Be sure to let me know. I can see your picture on my site now! Since I don’t use Blogger, a lot of people’s pics don’t appear unless they register with Gravatar. But now your pic should follow you around to all other non-Blogger sites too.

    Crap. I buy em too.
How funny, Mr. Fancypants has to have British undies. Does he call em knickers?

    CherNo Gravatar Replied:

Yes, actually sometimes he does! In his defense, his family is Scottish, so Marks & Spencers gitch is what he had growing up. I guess he just got used to those certain ones.

  8. SaltNo Gravatar Says:

Thankfully, my husband does buy his own socks and underwear. He also does his own laundry, which would explain why he has so many pairs of said socks and underwear (because he gets too lazy with the laundry and then just goes out to buy more).

    I’m in!

My 16 year old son made kraft dinner last night. When I asked him why it was so soup like he said he must have put too much water in it? When I asked him if he drained the water off before putting the cheese in he looked at me as though I were speaking swahili.

    Mom Fail…..

J doesn’t buy his own anything. In fact, I don’t remember the last time he was in a store. The funny thing is that he wasn’t a mama’s boy at all. He always took care of himself and his needs. Until I came along. I’m causing him to regress I think. Oh God…thank you for bringing this to my attention. He’s going out this weekend and buying new socks and new underwear just to get back in the habit. Thanks!

    CherNo Gravatar Replied:

Yes, you need to rectify this immediately!

This is my first time visiting your blog. I always see your profile picture at another blog that’s one of my faves (Leigh vs Laundry) anyway, I clicked over today and read this post. Totally cracked me up. My children kept asking me, “Mommy, what are you laughing at?”
I buy all the socks and underwear at this house too! I have 3 little girls, but am due in September with a boy. We are so excited! :)
So enjoyed your blog. I’m a new follower!

OMG…I’m SOO in for this! Although Neal has always bought his own underwear and socks…I think the Army has taught him to be more self-sufficient than the average man. But I am strongly against a world of Mama’s boys so wherever I have to sign to join this crazy train, I’m on it.

However, in starting this campaign, we will have to be careful about criticizing when they come home with a pair of boxers that say “nice” in the daylight and “naughty” in the dark…

  14. AmandaNo Gravatar Says:

I’m so with you!!! I’m all about teaching my son to do for himself. Although I do have to say, my hubby has bough this own underwear…but wont’ wash or fold or put away any! Makes me crazy!

  15. Lucky DameNo Gravatar Says:

My husband buys his boxers….mainly because I hate Wal-Mart and he loves to buy them there. I’ll buy him silly novelty ones from the Gap but otherwise he is on his own.

My kids are under 4…..can they shop for themselves yet? Actually, my husband buys our toddlers boxers, again with Wal-Mart, because he hates what I pick out.

  16. foxyNo Gravatar Says:

I do buy Jason’s socks and undies (which gives me the right to call them ‘panties’ if i want to). Come to think of it… I buy all of his clothes. He absolutely hates shopping. More than me, even, which is a LOT. But I guess it’s a swap because he does most of the grocery shopping. Yeah, I’ll make that trade.

  17. DebNo Gravatar Says:

Socks and underwear are the ONLY articles of clothing that I buy hubby.

  18. ElleNo Gravatar Says:

Hubby buys his own socks and underwear AND does all his own laundry! I didn’t teach him that – he came like that :)

  19. Bringing Pretty BackNo Gravatar Says:

Cher , Thank you for your comment! OH! I have LOTS of ideas for marriage!
You will LAUGH when you read my post …. on how socks were a BIG problem in our marriage!

  20. KrystenNo Gravatar Says:

I am proud to say that my hubby buys his own underwear and socks. YAY!

When I was growing up my mom ALWAYS ironed my dad’s work clothes. Drove me nuts. My dad would sit there reading the paper and my mom would iron his stuff.

So when the hubby and I got married I informed him that I will NEVER iron his clothes. He can be wrinkly or he can iron his own stuff but I will not iron it. No way.

  21. I Said SoNo Gravatar Says:

OMG! I am laughing so hard. I always say “I’m never buying toilet paper again. I am the only one who buys anything around here. You all take me for granted!”

That is a hilarious story. I think all moms/wives have felt like this at some point!

    Thanks for sharing!

  22. KristinNo Gravatar Says:

Heyyyyyy, my hubs never buys sucks, underwear or undershirts. You just brought on a fight. HA!

  23. ScoManNo Gravatar Says:

I buy my own socks and underwear, because if I didn’t, who would?

I don’t like ankle socks. They only go up to my ankle, and then I rip them trying to pull them up past my ankle.

It’s true that I probably don’t understand how they’re intended to be worn.

  24. CassieNo Gravatar Says:

My husband buys all his own stuff. Only occasionally I have to remind him that they aren’t supposed to have holes in them and he should go buy some new ones.

  25. CandiceNo Gravatar Says:

Good thing I’m not married to your hubby or we really would have a reason to get our socks confused. I’m also a size 11.

Just call me big foot. Except Im way less hairy.

Go ahead - leave me a comment. I dare you.
