Massachusetts – the State so nice, I’m going there twice!
(FYI for the Canadian readers- apparently residents of Massachusetts are often referred to as “Massholes”. Not sure if this is derogatory or not. My apologies if it is.)
You may remember my super awesome whirlwind trip to Boston & The Cape back in July when this happened;
(Monique, Jessalyn, Kate and me)
And this . . .
(me, CHELSEA HANDLER!, Jess & SurferWife – notice how tightly Chelsea’s hugging me?! Just sayin’)
And this . . .
(yep – me & Heather McDonald!)
Well, I’m heading to Boston again – today! This afternoon in fact. But sadly, there will be no blogger meet-up this time. Nor will there be backstage fun and craziness with Chelsea or Heather McDonald.
Instead I’ll be flying down with my BFF Elle to meet up with another Canadian girlfriend who relocated to just out south of Boston a couple years ago. This trip will include;
- some much needed girl time
- some equally needed relaxing
- LOTS of shopping. The Canadian dollar has been kicking some US dollar’s ass lately so I’ll be getting good bang for my shopping buck (woo hoo for that!) and I’m in desperate need of some new Fall/Winter clothes
- lots of eating – we’re 3 girls who love our grub
- fancy, fruity, girlie drinks
There is one more component to this quickie 3 day trip, however. Our friend in Boston has spent the summer getting her private pilot’s license. Yes – as in – to fly a plane. A very, very, small plane. A plane you can basically compare to a Mini Cooper with wings. There’s only 4 seats. And the front two lift forward to let the passengers in the back. Elle & I will be the nauseous one’s experiencing cardiac arrest passengers in the back.
And if that isn’t bad enough, the municipal airport she flies out of basically has a grassy take-off strip in a Farmer’s field. Is this legal in the US? I choose to assume so.
And if you’re not already worried enough about my safety, I’ll add that we’ll be flying from south of Boston to Martha’s Vineyard.
So just go ahead and just say it – we’re all thinking it anyway . . . “Geez Cher – isn’t that where JFK Jr., well, you know, died in a small private plane crash?”
YES! Yes it is!
I know it, and you know it, but we’re not going to concentrate on that fact because Elle is a big scaredy cat and if might freak her out and then she’ll put the kibosh on the whole private plane flight thing. And that would be a shame because I’ve been lead to believe that the 30-ish minute flight to Martha’s this time of year is beautiful what with the leaves turning colour and all. AND I’ve spent the last 2 months psyching myself up for it.
So you will all send happy, lucky, positive thoughts my way on Friday when we take that flight. Otherwise you’re all getting my boys for 1 week each on a rotating basis.
I do hope to be able to blog about it once I return. Wish me luck.
Would you go up in such a small plane or are we crazy? Have you ever been in such a small plane and if so, do you recommend bringing a barf-bag? Do you have a favourite US clothing store that I should be sure to visit?

Oh my gosh, that sounds crazy, but exhilarating and totally exciting at the same time! You are going to have such a blast. Man, I need some quality girl time!

Wooo Hooo for small planes!!! It’s going to be a blast and the weather will be MUCH better than when JFK went flying.
See you in 6 hours!!!

oh yes. That’s right. I forgot. I think I forgot because I am insanely jealous. Insane. Jealousy.
I begrudgingly wish you a fantastic time.
Oh, and your boys are welcome here anytime.

I hope you have a wonderful time! We moms of boys need to escape often.
PS No. I wouldn’t ride in one of those planes. I’m a big, fat chicken. But I did do a helicopter tour in Hawaii.
PPS I’m a terrible shopper so I have no clothing advice. Sorry. I’m sure your friend will know.

you should totally go! that’s an opportunity in a lifetime – hopefully a long lifetime that you get to tell the story lots of times.

I’m a total chicken and I have a fear of flying in large planes…so yes, I think you are crazy. But I’m sure you will have an amazing time. Take pictures.

You’re gonna have so much fun.
That is if there’s not a JFK incident. Holy crap, woman, I couldn’t even FIT on one of those planes. I’m sure I’d just wear it as a shoe.

FUN! I’ve been on a plane that small before. I have a cousin who is a pilot. It’s totally fun! Can’t wait to hear all about your trip!

I have two in-laws that used to be from Massachusetts. They now live in Jersey. Either my family is incredibly charasmatic and that’s why they left or they were looking for an escape route out of that state and used my siblings as one. It’s probably the former. My family is amazing.

You will be fine. You don’t have the Kennedy curse. Have fun.

I hope the plane trip isn’t as bad as you make it out to be and that the shopping is better than you expect!

Wow – have a great time – I think I would go in the plane but I’d also be terrified too! Hope you get some great flying conditions – I’m sure the trees are beautiful up there – take lots of photos, the trees are nice in Denver at the moment but I’m sure it doesn’t compare to Mass.
Masshole – so funny, do people actually like that?!
Have a great weekend,

I’m so glad I’m finally caught up on this because, even though I was following the tweets, I could not figure out why you were getting on that plane. I also assumed the person flying was like an ex Air Force pilot or something. So…now I completely understand SurferWife’s concern. And I’m glad I was in the dark for all of it.
I hope you girls have a BLAST this weekend. I’m super sad you aren’t going to be able to join us in Savannah next weekend. I think it will be 48373 different types of fun, with 2244 of them being illegal in 7 countries. But I think you have your own fun going on this weekend. Can’t wait to hear about it!!

I’m not sure if this compares, but I was in a helicopter once in Hawaii and it really was an incredible experience once I got over the initial barfbag natural reaction to the motion sickness. I’m sure you’ll be fine and that sounds like SO MUCH FUN! I’m sending all good vibes your way
Also, YOU GOT TO MEET CHELSEA HANDLER!?!? Color me insanely jealous. That is all sorts of awesome!
October 26th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
Sounds like a fabulous trip. I haven’t been to Martha’s Vineyard in 40 zillion years. Will be curious to hear how your flight there was. It’s great that you’re taking (or already took) a break from everyday life.

If you’re a Masshole, I’m a Canadiass.
Tell someone in your city to give me a job.
